What to Expect at Your First Personal Training Session in San Juan Capistrano

If you've never worked with a personal trainer, booking that first session can feel like a big step. Maybe you're worried you're "not in shape enough" yet, that you'll be judged, or that you'll be thrown into a workout you can't finish.

I hear this all the time, and I get it. After more than 15 years of training clients in South Orange County, here's the truth: most of my in-person clients started exactly where you are. They were regular people with busy lives who wanted to feel stronger, lose some fat, move without pain, or finally stick with something.

So you know exactly what you're walking into, here's what happens at your first personal training session in San Juan Capistrano.

Before You Arrive: A Quick Conversation

Before we ever touch a weight, we talk. When you reach out through my contact form or text me, I'll ask a few simple questions:

  • What are your goals? (Fat loss, muscle, strength, energy, feeling better in your clothes, moving without pain)

  • What does your schedule look like?

  • Any injuries, surgeries, or aches I should know about?

  • What have you tried before, and what didn't work?

There are no wrong answers. This just helps me plan a first session that fits you instead of a cookie-cutter workout.

Where We Train: SJC Strength & Vitality

I train in-person clients at SJC Strength & Vitality, 33081 Camino Capistrano in San Juan Capistrano. It's a private, focused gym — not a crowded big-box gym where you're waiting for machines or feeling watched. For a lot of beginners, that alone takes away half the nerves.

Step 1: Movement Check (Not a Fitness Test)

Your first session is not a test to see how hard you can push. I'll walk you through a few basic movements — things like a bodyweight squat, a hinge, a push and a pull — so I can see how your body moves.

I'm looking at things like:

  • Hip, ankle and shoulder mobility

  • How you brace your core

  • Any side-to-side differences or tight spots

  • Old injuries that change how you move

Because I'm also a licensed massage therapist, I pay close attention to tension and compensation patterns that most trainers miss. That shapes how we load your body safely from day one.

Step 2: Your First Workout

Next, we'll do a real — but very manageable — workout. Expect a warm-up, three to five exercises, and plenty of coaching on form. I'll show you how each movement should feel, adjust the weight to your level, and explain why we're doing it.

You will not be crawling out of the gym. The goal of session one is to leave feeling good, a little challenged, and confident that you can do this. Soreness for a day or two is normal; feeling wrecked is not the goal.

Step 3: Your Game Plan

At the end, we'll talk about what comes next:

  • How many days per week makes sense for your schedule and goals

  • Simple nutrition habits to start with — no extreme diets

  • How we'll track progress (strength, measurements, photos, how you feel)

  • Whether recovery work like sports massage would help you

Every program I write uses progressive overload — small, steady increases over time — so you keep getting results without burning out or getting hurt.

What to Wear and Bring

  • Comfortable athletic clothes you can move in

  • Supportive sneakers (flat shoes are great for lifting)

  • A water bottle and a small towel

  • A light snack 60–90 minutes before if you tend to get lightheaded

Common First-Session Worries

"I'm too out of shape to start."

That's exactly why you work with a trainer. Everything is scaled to where you are today.

"I don't know how to use any of the equipment."

You don't need to. Teaching you is my job.

"I've tried before and quit."

Most people quit because the plan didn't fit their life. We build around your schedule and goals so it's realistic to keep going.

Real Clients, Real Results

One of my clients, Ryan, started training with me at 6 a.m. In his words, over about a year and a half he built "a realistic eating style where I can gain muscle and lose body fat" and finally had "the confidence to see myself without a shirt."
